Cats still missing after storm; other pets found

Several cats are still missing following the March 26 tornado; other pets have been found recently, but their owners are unknown.

Members of Facebook groups including Lost and Found Pets of Coweta County GA and Newnan Tornado Lost and Found have been hard at work trying to reunite pets and owners.

At the Coweta Animal Services Shelter, four young cats, all apparently from the same litter, were found on Watson Drive and brought to the shelter April 1. There are two brown tabbies, a gray cat and a white-and-black cat, all with long hair.

New KC Pet Project program reuniting struggling owners and their pets

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new program is helping people in crisis during the pandemic keep their pets. KC Pet Project recently launched Home Away From Home to foster pets until they can get back on their feet. 

The shelter launched a Keep ‘Em Together program a couple months into the pandemic to try to help provide financial resources to struggling pet owners. But what they found many people just needed was time. 

MariAnn McCurry has had her Jack Russell Terrier, Sophia, since college. She was a comfort to her and her 3-year-old daughter at the start of the pandemic.

A side effect of the pandemic: Chunky pets

Veterinarians are noticing a side effect of the coronavirus pandemic: weight gain in pets. 

BluePearl Veterinary Partners, a national pet hospital organization, found that last year, over half of the 1.1 million pets treated at their clinics were overweight: 52% of dogs and 56% of cats. BluePearl discovered a 24% increase in overweight dogs treated at its practices over the last seven years. 

A Hill’s Pet Nutrition study revealed that 71% of vets reported seeing pet weight gain in their office linked to the pandemic. More than half of pet owners said they give their pets treats for no reason.

Pet dog found hanging in Grand Rapids home has man facing 2 felonies

The Chihuahua was killed in what was described as a domestic dispute; Cordell Posey, Jr. faces an enhanced animal killing/torturing charge.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids man is facing two felony charges for breaking into a woman’s home and killing her pet Chihuahua by hanging it with a rope.

Investigators say 34-year-old Cordell Eugene Posey, Jr. had been in a relationship with the woman; she lives on the city’s Southwest side.

Police say the break-in occurred on March 23. The dog was found hanging in an enclosed area of the home.
