Mystery canine illness identified as animal coronavirus

An outbreak of vomiting among dogs has been traced back to a type of animal coronavirus by researchers.


Vets across the country began reporting cases of acute onset prolific vomiting in 2019/20.

The Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNet) at the University of Liverpool asked vets for help in collecting data, with 1,258 case questionnaires from vets and owners plus 95 clinical samples from 71 .

Animal welfare advocates want harsher penalties for planned abuse

Animal welfare advocates with Salt Lake County Animal Services are calling for harsher criminal penalties for those who intentionally injure animals after a dog was kidnapped last month and lit on fire.

“Dixie’s Law,” named for a 4-year-old red heeler that died days after getting taken by a family member’s ex-boyfriend, would allow for enhanced penalties for premeditated animal abuse cases, said Salt Lake County Animal Services Director Talia Butler.

Regional officials in Spain have temporarily halted all activity at an animal testing facility after the publication of undercover footage that appears to show animals being taunted, smacked, tossed around and cut into with no or inadequate anaesthesia.

Carpentersville man charged with animal cruelty in dog stabbing

A Carpentersville man is facing an animal cruelty charge after his family’s dog was found fatally stabbed in a forest preserve near Barrington Hills.

Christopher Castillo, 23, was charged last month with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, authorities said.

Kane County Forest Preserve Police Chief Mike Gilloffo said the charge stems from a March 25 incident.

Castillo told his parents he was taking the dog for a walk around 4:30 a.m., authorities said. When he did not return by 8 a.m., they reported him missing.
